Native Garden Open Day

Garden1: Halls Garden - 127 Rooneys Road, Warrnambool.
Mike and Liz Halls began growing Australian native plants after building their family home some 35 years ago on a half acre block which at that time was on the outskirts of Warrnambool. Today, while housing has developed around them, they still retain and enjoy growing their hardy drought tolerant native trees and shrubs. Their well drained soils allow them to grow plants such as Banksia, Acacia, Grevillea, Geraldton Wax, Waratah, Correas, Callistemon and many other unusual species. Their front nature strip has a collection of native grasses, much easier to maintain than having a lawn to mow.
Garden 2: Sparrow Garden - 35 Swan Street, Warrnambool.
How many native plants can you grow on a quarter acre block? ……...The answer is heaps! There is a native plant for every possible spot you can think of.
Kevin & Joyce Sparrow have been growing Australian native plants for the past 20 years, starting out with Banksia and Hakea and all on their small house block. Today these plants are interspersed with smaller growing Correa, Eremophila and dry, shade tolerant plants such as Lasiopetalum. Kevin propagates many of his own plants so there are lots of interesting and unusual species. They also have an interest in orchids, growing Cymbidiums, Dendrobiums and native ground orchids such as Greenhoods.
Garden 3: Deppeler Garden - 18 Hermitage Drive, Allansford.
This 15 acre property that fronts the Hopkins River was bare farmland only 7 years ago. The first priority after building the house and nursery was to fence off the river to exclude the cattle and to plant 4000 indigenous trees and shrubs to help control erosion and establish a habitat area for wildlife.
This spectacular garden has a scenic view of the Hopkins River and features Acacias, Eucalypts, Banksias, Kangaroo Paws, Grevilleas, Lilly Pilly’s and lots more. Platypus and water rats and over 40 species of birds have been observed on the property. Allow plenty of time to see this garden.
Also at this garden: Plant sales (3 nurseries); Free soil PH testing (bring sample of soil); Raffle tickets, displays and much more.
Tickets $6 for entry to all 3 gardens (available from any of the gardens).

LOCATION: See locations - Gardens 1, 2, 3.
